Victoria Samson Calizo

July 6, 1965 – January 23, 2012

Vicky was born in July 6, 1965 in Caloocan City, Philippines. The youngest daughter of Juan and Segundina Samson and was fondly called Nenette by her family and those closest to her.  Vicky grew up in a humble dwelling in Caloocan City with a big family of seven sisters and one brother.  Even when their big family lived so far apart, the deep bond they have created remained and Vicky was always a positive force and one of the family’s cheerleader.

Vicky completed her college education in the Philippines and moved to the United States in 1989.  She was married to Ruben Calizo and they have a beautiful daughter , Ruvi Anne, who is now 11 years old.  Together as a family, they have made a loving home in Maryland.  Their home has also become the home base of many of Vicky’s volunteer activities.  In addition, Vicky also enjoyed and was proud of her job in Verizon.

Vicky never ran out of energy.  She was always involved in the church and in the community.  She was tirelessly active in the local community of Filipinos and was very enthusiastic in being part of numerous Filipino organizations.  She gave a lot of her time and effort to Mabuhay, Inc. a non-profit Filipino – American Association and her work was recognized last year when they Elected her President of the Association.  She was also a devout and active church member of the Holy Family Church.  With her enthusiasm, a regular Filipino-American  mass is now established along with “Simbang Gabi” masses during Christmas at Holy Family Catholic Church.

Vicky was always there to lend a helping hand.  She was kind, friendly, warm and loving.  She didn’t let having cancer stop her from doing what needed to be done.  Even though she is no longer with us, she still doing her share of keeping the family together.  It is her passing that that has brought all of us together and we are sure that she is bringing all the family members that have passed before us together now as well.

We misses you Vicky!

Mabuhay Inc. has volunteered to man the Childrens’ Tent for this year’s Asian Festival at George Mason University on July 23 and 24. I am asking MICS’ parents and students, and Mabuhay Inc. Youth to help us on Saturday. We will again be making parols at the Childrens’ Tent, and this year we will include teaching and playing Filipino games like Patintero, Luksong Tinik, Sungka, and Tumbang Preso. If your schedule will permit you, please confirm by replying to this email (after you have done the survey) and I wil lsend the details of how, when, and where we will particiapte in this endeavor. If you also have a sungka set and are going, please these with you.

Finally, I will ask our MICS parents to help me plan for MICS this school year. Our MICS’ Staff has seen the great enthusiasm and increased participation of our parent volunteers in helping out run our MICS. We plan to meet some time this summer and prepare for the MICS’ Open House in October. If you are interested, please don’t hesitate to email me back or call me.

Hundreds or perhaps thousands of people showed up and extended free dental services. We also gave out some toothbrushes,
toothpastes, and children’s toys.

All Mabuhay, Inc. volunteers travelled without hesitation, shared their blessings and made beautiful smiles a reality for our
kababayans. These were the reasons that made this trip a worthwhile and successful program!
